Descendants
of James S. Whitsett
of Memphis, Tennessee
By Ronald N. Wall
Updated and corrected November 8, 2007 |
NOTE:
Some members of this family used the "Whitsitt"
spelling of the name. I have used the version
that is used in the records except where family
records reflect an alternate spelling.
Special thanks to Josh
and Amanda Lyle who have a family Bible and family
history that has been a tremendous help in sorting
out the children of Rev. William and Jean (Harden)
Whitsett and those of James Stockard and Sarah
(Jackson) Whitsett.

"The Whitsitt Generation"
James Stockard Whitsitt married Sarah Jackson
(dates to be found on tombstones in Winchester
Cemetery, Memphis). Children 1)William Wylie,
2)Catharine, 3)Samuel, 4)Nelson, 5)Mary Eliza,
6)James, 7) John, 8)Brice Andrew.
Livonia J. Whitsitt married John Bowen Hays,
Nov. 12, 1873. Both natives of Shelby Co.
Tenn.
John P. H. Whitsitt married Mrs. Sallie Harris Trotter
Brice Andrew Whitsitt married Mattie Shelton Howard Oct. 20, 1880.
The Norman's and Brice's of East Tenn. are connected with the
Whitsitt family. Great Grandmother Jackson was Miss Brice.
Brice Andrew Whitsitt died on the march from Nashville, Tenn to
the Battle of Shiloh, Civil War. He was buried at Burnsville,
Miss. He was in Capt. O Haver's Command.
John Clack Hardaway (grandfather) removed
from Dinwiddie Co Va. to Tenn in 1839. The
household goods and chattles being moved in
covered wagons, the family in carriages. The
young men and negroes rode horseback. Always
several men were sent forward to find a good
camping place. When the train of wagons and
carriages came to the camping place, the negro
cook prepared supper while the negro men set
up tents and got everything in order for the
night, attending to the feeding of stock,
cattle, etc. Mother said they had more pleasure
on that trip than ever before or after.
Grandfather Whitsitt died before I, Josephine,
was born. Grandmother Whitsitt, nee Sarah
Jackson, was a beautiful old lady. Born Oct.
11, 1776, died in 1853."

I received a photocopy of the Family History
Book I mentioned last
week. I will send a photocopy to you,
but in the meantime, I thought
I'd type and send what I thought would
be of most interest to you.
Much of the book focuses on the Hardaway's, as opposed to the
Whitsitt's, but it was compiled by Livonia Josephine Whitsitt.
Here
is the inscription from the front
of the book:
"Copied
from Genealogy compiled by Livonia
Josephine Whitsitt Hays
for Mrs. Lucy Rebecca Whitsitt Bledsoe
and family, by Jennie D.
Howard, October 12, 1937."
The book
is entirely handwritten, and most
of it is a very confusing
(at least for me) and cluttered family
tree. The back contains
history about some of the branches.
Here is what is included about
the Whitsitt's:
"The
Whitsitt Generation.
James
Stockard Whitsitt married Sarah Jackson
(dates to be found on
tombstones in Winchester Cemetery,
Memphis). Children 1)William
Wylie, 2)Catharine, 3)Samuel, 4)Nelson,
5)Mary Eliza, 6)James, 7)
John, 8)Brice Andrew.
Livonia
J. Whitsitt married John Bowen Hays,
Nov. 12, 1873. Both
natives of Shelby Co. Tenn.
John P. H. Whitsitt married
Mrs. Sallie Harris Trotter
Brice
Andrew Whitsitt married Mattie Shelton
Howard Oct. 20, 1880.
The Norman's and Brice's of East Tenn. are connected with
the Whitsitt
family. Great Grandmother Jackson
was Miss Brice.
Brice
Andrew Whitsitt died on the march
from Nashville, Tenn to the
Battle of Shiloh, Civil War. He was
buried at Burnsville, Miss. He
was in Capt. O Haver's Command.
John
Clack Hardaway (grandfather) removed
from Dinwiddie Co Va. to
Tenn in 1839. The household goods
and chattles being moved in
covered wagons, the family in carriages.
The young men and negroes
rode horseback. Always several men
were sent forward to find a good
camping place. When the train of wagons
and carriages came to the
camping place, the negro cook prepared
supper while the negro men set
up tents and got everything in order
for the night, attending to the
feeding of stock, cattle, etc. Mother
said they had more pleasure on
that trip than ever before or after.
Grandfather
Whitsitt died before I, Josephine,
was born.
Grandmother
Whitsitt, nee Sarah Jackson, was a
beautiful old lady.
Born Oct. 11, 1776, died in 1853."
This
should clear up some of the confusion
over which children
belonged to James Whitsitt, and which
belonged to Rev. Whitsitt, so I
thought you would be especially interested.
Unfortunately it does
not mention how James Whitsitt died.

... My husband and I recently rediscovered
a family Bible from 1855. It
is full of his family's history, and I googled
some of the names and
found your website. Apparently, my husband
is a direct descendant of
Rev. William Whitsett. Robert Howard Bledsoe
is his great-
grandfather. I found a couple of things in
the family Bible that may
or may not be of interest to you...
Lucy W. Whitsitt's birth and marriage is listed
in the family Bible,
but her name appears as Lucy Rebecca Whitsett.
This is of course,
very minor.
Lucy W. Whitsitt's
husband is listed as "Unknown" Bledsoe
[since corrected]. Her husband's name was
Haywood Cash Bledsoe and they were married
in 1902. My Father-in-law told me that one
day, Haywood told Lucy that he was going to
get some milk. Nineteen years later she went
to get the milk off the front porch, and there
he was---I'm not sure where he was for 19
years, or when he died. I would like to speak
to my husband's grandmother (Bobbie Bledsoe
Lyle) about this, as I am sure she knows more
details of the story.
